What Is Dry Eye?
Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears, or when the tears you do have are of low quality and evaporate too quickly. Either way, your eyes aren’t getting the moisture they need to stay healthy and comfortable.
This condition can be chronic and tends to get worse over time without proper care. That’s why it’s important to get to the root cause early on.

Symptoms of Dry Eye
Dry eye isn’t always obvious. Some people experience discomfort, while others deal with excessive tearing. Common symptoms include:
- Dryness or grittiness
- Irritation or stinging
- Red or irritated eyes
- Blurry or fluctuating vision
- Excess tearing or watery eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Trouble wearing contact lenses
What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye can have more than one cause, and often, it’s a mix of things. One of the most common contributors is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a blockage in the tiny glands along your eyelids that help keep your tears from evaporating too fast.
Other factors include:
- Alberta’s dry climate and wind
- Long hours on digital screens (we blink less when we stare!)
- Aging
- Certain medications, like antihistamines or antidepressants
- Hormonal changes
- Contact lens wear
- Eyelid inflammation or skin conditions
We’ll take all of this into account when designing your care plan.
Your Dry Eye Consultation& Treatment
During a dry eye consultation, we can assess your symptoms and determine the underlying cause of your dry eye. Testing dry eye may involve measuring the volume and quality of your tears, examining your eyelids and cornea, and evaluating your medical history and current medications.
Based on the results of your evaluation, we can create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and symptoms. Are your eyes feeling as dry as a wheat field? We have your back!
Scleral lenses are larger, gas-permeable contact lenses that rest on the white part of your eye (the sclera) instead of directly on the cornea. This unique design creates a fluid-filled chamber over your cornea, helping to protect it and keep it consistently hydrated throughout the day.
They’re especially helpful for patients with moderate to severe dry eye, keratoconus, or post-surgical eyes, offering both relief and sharper vision. If standard treatments aren’t doing the trick, scleral lenses might be your new secret weapon for long-lasting comfort.
Not all eye drops are created equal. We carry a range of artificial tears and prescription-strength drops, each designed to support your eyes in different ways, from lubricating the surface to reducing inflammation or increasing tear production.
During your dry eye assessment, we’ll determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and match you with drops that target it directly. This way, you’re not wasting time or money on over-the-counter options that don’t address the root of the problem.
When dry eye is caused or worsened by clogged oil glands or eyelid inflammation, surface-level solutions won’t cut it. We may recommend a full toolkit of at-home treatments, including warm compress masks to improve oil flow, gentle lid cleansers to reduce bacteria buildup, and sterile wipes that support eyelid hygiene.
These treatments can also help manage conditions like blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which are common contributors to dry eye. With the right daily routine, you can give your eyes the support they need to stay clear, clean, and comfortable.

Don’t Let Dry Eye Slow You Down
If your eyes are constantly dry, irritated, red, or watery, don’t brush it off. Dry eye can affect your comfort, productivity, and long-term eye health, but with the right treatment, you can feel and see the difference.
