Why Contact Lens Exams Are Important

A contact lens exam is different from a regular eye exam. In addition to checking your vision and eye health, we take precise measurements of your eyes, including curvature, diameter, and tear film quality, to determine which type of lenses will offer the best comfort and clarity.

This is especially important if you have dry eye, astigmatism, or other conditions that may affect your fit.

Finding the Right Fit for You

Not all contact lenses are created equal, and not all eyes are either. That’s why we take the time to match each patient with lenses that fit their vision needs, eye shape, and lifestyle.

Whether you’re navigating astigmatism, managing myopia, or just want a break from your glasses, we’ll help you find lenses that feel good and help you see even better. From everyday soft lenses to specialty designs for unique eye conditions, our team will walk you through your options and guide you toward the best fit.

Scleral lenses are larger than standard contact lenses and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera), making them a great option for people with sensitive corneas, dry eye, or post-surgical eyes. They vault over the cornea and create a fluid reservoir, which provides extra moisture and comfort throughout the day.

These lenses are often used to help manage keratoconus, severe dry eye, or corneal scarring, and they offer exceptional stability, comfort, and visual clarity.

Ortho-k lenses are a non-surgical solution to correct nearsightedness while you sleep. These custom-fitted, gas-permeable lenses gently reshape the surface of your eye overnight, allowing you to wake up with clear daytime vision, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts.

Ortho-k is a growing solution in myopia control for children, helping slow the progression of nearsightedness while offering a glasses-free daytime experience.

If you have astigmatism, you’ll need contact lenses that stay put and provide stable, clear vision throughout the day.

Toric lenses are specially designed with different powers in different meridians to correct astigmatism and prevent the lens from rotating. We offer daily and monthly toric lenses, so you can choose the option that works best for your routine and comfort.

Say goodbye to switching between your contacts and reading glasses. Multifocal lenses provide smooth, seamless vision correction at multiple distances, making them ideal if you’re starting to experience presbyopia (age-related near vision loss).

These lenses are a great option if you want the freedom to see clearly up close, far away, and everything in between, without compromise.

RGP lenses are durable, breathable, hard lenses that offer crisp, high-definition vision. They’re often recommended for people with high astigmatism, corneal irregularities, or conditions like keratoconus.

Although they can take a little getting used to, RGPs can provide excellent clarity and long-term eye health benefits.

The Contact Lens Fitting Process

Getting the right lenses isn’t just about vision; it’s about comfort, lifestyle, and long-term eye health. Here’s what to expect:

  • Fitting: We’ll measure your eyes and choose the best lens style and brand for your needs.
  • Teach: New to contacts? No problem. We’ll show you exactly how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses safely and confidently.
  • Progress check: After a trial period, we’ll bring you back in to see how your eyes are adjusting. If all looks great, we’ll move forward with your supply. If not, we’ll adjust the fit or style to get it just right.

Choosing the Right Brand

With so many brands out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the right contact lenses. We can recommend a brand for your eyes based on your prescription, lifestyle, and preferences.

Some of the popular brands we offer at Airdrie Family Eye Doctors include:

  • Acuvue
  • Johnson&Johnson
  • Alcon
  • Bausch & Lomb
