Types of Refractive Surgery

PRK was the first refractive surgery to employ the use of lasers, and it is still quite popular to this day. Ophthalmologists often perform PRK on patients whose corneas are too thin to undergo most refractive errors stem from the shape of the cornea. PRK corrects this by using lasers to reshape the outer layer of the cornea. The procedure takes roughly 10-15 minutes per eye and usually results in clear vision within a week. Typically a patient’s vision stabilises after a few weeks.

While you are healing, you should refrain from any strenuous physical activity and ensure your eyes are protected from anything that could trigger infection.

LASIK is currently the most popular refractive surgery in the world. While PRK reshapes the outer layers of the cornea, LASIK employs what is called the flap method.

The ophthalmologist creates a small flap in the outer layers of the cornea; folding it back to expose the mid-layers. They then use a laser to reshape the mid-layers, replacing the flap when they are done. The flap method helps prevent infection and allows for faster healing.

Most patients experience clear vision within 24 hours and stabilised vision within a few weeks. While you are healing, you should avoid any strenuous physical activity as well as anything that may cause flap-related complications.

How We Will Help You Through Your Laser Eye Surgery Process

When you come in for your consultation, we will start by conducting a thorough examination of your eyes; we need to make sure there are no conditions or eye health issues that might make you unsuitable for surgery. We will also determine exactly what level of correction you need.

Once we have ensured that you’re a good candidate for surgery, we will turn the floor over to you. This is when you get to ask all of your questions and bring up any concerns you might have. We will answer each one thoroughly, never rushing through an explanation and making sure you understand our answers before we move on to the next one. We want you to feel 100% comfortable and confident in your decision to undergo surgery.

Now that you have had a chance to ask your questions and you feel satisfied with our answers, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for your procedure. But do not worry; you are still our patient and part of the Airdrie Family Eye Doctors family. We will check in on you after the surgery to make sure you are doing well and healing the way you are supposed to.
